Progress

During the first year of bio-diversity funding a grid of 450 rat traps covering 70Ha in a 25m grid was established, with additional possum, rat and cat traps in the buffer. This compares favourably with the aspiration stated in our funding application to establish three 100-trap areas per year.  There is now a grid of over 800 rat traps covering 111ha.

North Island Robin breeding has begun here.  Also 2 sightings of the very rare blue duck (whio) have been confirmed.  Waiaro Sanctuary is the largest privately owned Kauri Forest eco system in NZ to date, and has been identified as a migratory route for young Kiwi.

There has been an observed increase in wildlife in the valley already, the skinks and Wetas are thriving, and the Fantails are doing well. · There is a noticeable and growing population of brown teal in the area.
